Washington: US President Donald Trump is set to take Chinese President Xi Jinping to the National Archives on Friday, as the Chinese leader's three-day state visit to Washington draws to a close. The two leaders are expected to view the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
The visit comes as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its founding. Trump said on Thursday that he wanted to show Xi "some of the greatest treasures of that proud history".
The National Archives is also hosting a special exhibition titled "The American Story", highlighting the country's achievements and advances alongside images depicting some of its darker moments.
Trump had already shown Xi a wall-mounted copy of the Declaration of Independence kept in the Oval Office on Thursday. He also said he wanted to show the Chinese leader artefacts representing the history of US-China relations.
"Just as our ancestors reached across the ocean centuries ago to trade, to learn, and to build a better world, our two countries do really the same thing, and we're very proud of it," Trump said.
Xi's final day in Washington will begin at the White House, where Trump and first lady Melania Trump are scheduled to host Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, for tea.
The Trumps hosted Xi and Peng at a black-tie state dinner on Thursday attended by technology industry leaders. Earlier that day, Trump gave Xi a tour of parts of the White House, including a gallery of presidents and a new 100-foot-long (30-metre) granite helicopter landing pad, while also showing him the ballroom that remains under construction. Melania Trump and Peng visited the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art.
Trump and Xi also held a private meeting on Thursday. The Chinese government's account said the two leaders discussed issues including West Asia, Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula.
The National Archives, which houses the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights, is hosting a special Constitution Week exhibition through September 27 as part of the US 250th anniversary commemorations.
